It had been a long time coming, but it couldn't have happened on a better day – 2008 Homecoming. The Mustangs got their first win of the season over CSU – Pueblo, 24-14. WNMU will look to close out the 2008 season with another victory at home next weekend versus Fort Lewis College.
The Mustangs held the lead the entire game. Their first score came midway through the first quarter after two solid plays by Chris Voller (Albuquerque, NM/Valley High School) (Albuquerque, NM), John Means (Glendale, AZ/St. Mary's High School) (Glendale, AZ), and Tramell McGill (Phoenix, AZ/Hamilton High School) (Phoenix, AZ). Voller connected with Means for 31 yards to take the Mustangs to the Pueblo 11-yard line. McGill then rushed the ball into the end zone for the final 11. Steve Flores (Peoria, AZ/Peoria High School)' (Peoria, AZ) point-after was good.
With solid defense played by both teams, the next score didn't come until 11 seconds remained in the half. The Mustangs took the ball all the way from the WNMU 16-yard line to the end zone in two minutes and 33 seconds. Voller once again threw to Means. This time it was for the touchdown. The Mustangs were up by 14. This is the first game this season the Mustangs walked into the locker room with the lead.
The third quarter saw no scoring action, but Pueblo put together a great drive at the end of the quarter to score immediately in the fourth. Pueblo's quarterback Washington posted his first touchdown of the game on a caught pass for ten yards.
WNMU couldn't put anything together on the next drive, but the Mustangs got the ball back quickly after Tony Norman (Richmond, CA/Kennedy High School) (Richmond, CA) intercepted the ball at the Pueblo-46 and returned it for 17 yards to the Pueblo-29. Nine plays later, the Mustangs got stuck at the one-yard line though. Steve Flores (Peoria, AZ/Peoria High School) was able to tack on three points to put the Mustangs up by ten, 17-7.
The purple and gold defense did their job on the next drive and forced Pueblo to go three and out. This set up the Mustangs nicely, and Voller took advantage. Voller hooked up with Means for a 68-yard pass and his second touchdown of the day.
Pueblo didn't quit though. With three minutes remaining in the game, Pueblo scored their own touchdown on the next drive after five quick plays. It was too little too late.
The Mustangs threw for 378 yards on the day. Means caught 163 of those on eight catches. Carlos Miranda (Peoria, AZ/Peoria High School) (Peoria, AZ) also had eight catches, good for 57 yards. The CSU – Pueblo ThunderWolves finished with 150 yards in the air. On the ground, the Mustangs also had the advantage with 126 yards. Pueblo posted only 61.
Defensively for the Mustangs, Darryl Horne (Mesa, AZ/Dobson High School) (Mesa, AZ) finished the day with ten tackles. Two of those were for a loss of six yards. He also had one breakup. Anthony Kahill (Cincinnati, OH/Jacobs High School) (Cincinnati, OH) also excelled on defense with eight tackles and one sack for a loss of 12 yards.
